This was yesterday afternoon (Jan 8 2017) me and two of my friends went to Park San Giuliano in Mestre, Venice to practice portrait shoot. My friend Mohamed had zero modeling experience, my "assistant" Aymen had zero photography experience, too, we were just three friends hanging out, having fun with all the gear I got.
The result was not bad, despite the lack of experience of my team, that's how I would say to everybody as photographer myself in order to stay humble, to my friends I say "bravo! You guys did a fantastic job!" and that's how I truly feel, and I'm thankful for them taking their precious time to help me practice.
This photo above is shot with A7, Samyang 14mm f2.8, on camera flash (Neewer Speedlite NW320), edited in Lightroom.
At the moment it was the end of the session, we were heading home but the sunset, look at that sunset, how can anyone resist the urge to take some photos with that gorgeous view. I had HDR image in my mind and that's what I tried to do, turned on the flash, got the focus with the help of a video light held up by Aymen. The video light was too weak to make a significant difference in the picture, so it all comes down to the performance of the flash and the exposure of the background. The aperture was around 8, Samyang manual lens doesn't provide the information to my camera body so I can only guess what it was.
We shot a few shots like this, the sky was kept and Mohamed was very well lit, so I was very happy with the result. Here's another photo of that similar shot.
The park itself was pretty amazing that evening.
My flash doesn't support HSS which is a small disappointment, I want to create image like Jason Lanier, yes, I'm very much inspired by his work, portrait combined landscape? AWESOME! Since I just bought the flash, I don't have money to get a new flash nor a transmitter for HSS, so I thought maybe use ND filter would give the same effect at lower shutter speed? I just received the filters I got from Amazon today, to my disappointment the filters give a weird dark blue color to the image, reminds me of the dark blue ink of pen in my school time.
So far Samyang 85mm f1.4 has been my favorite lens, since I got my hands on this lens I just can't go back to my kit lens, 28-70mm is versatile yes but the aperture is unbearable (f3.5-5.6), every picture produced by the lens turns out to be boring in my eyes. So... I got the "nifty-fifty" of Sony's, it just arrived today along with the filters, I'm very excited to test it out, I'll talk about the lens later and surely make a video review of it, but for now, let's throw more pictures of that day's shoot here (all with Samyang 85mm f1.4)
The reflector really made a big difference here, we were shooting facing the sun, so his face was all dark if I don't want to blow out the sky, so here's the little trick we can do when we don't have HSS equipment, use a simple reflector! His face was immediately lit up and trust me, without that reflector the image would be him in complete dark.
We shot some pictures on a frozen river, Mohamed made huge sacrifice standing in the ice, if it took any minute longer his feet would be froze off.
